Made hair soft, but did not realize I needed two products to get the complete effect.

My natural hair color is around a 5N mousy brown with about 20% gray in patches. I loved the old formulation of Clairol Natural Instincts 5G but was very disappointed with the new formulation. After a lot of research and time at Sally Beauty, I decided to try Ion Color Brilliance Demi-Permanent hair color. After reading the reviews about it coming out darker than people expect, I decided to go with the Ion Demi 6G color. I did do a strand test first and liked the color. The first time I colored my hair I sprayed on a little of the Ion pre-treatment on the ends and top and colored with Ion 6G Demi using 2 oz. color to 3 oz. of Ion 10 volume developer. After rinsing out I used the Ion Color Protect After Color Sealer. The color was great but I could see my gray peeking through after about 3 weeks and the roots didn't quite take the color as much as I wanted. 2 months later I colored it again but this time I sectioned my hair and sprayed the root and sections and a few inches into the grown out colored hair with Ion pre-treatment and combed it through. I mixed 2 oz color with 2 oz ion 10 volume developer and added .25 oz of 20 volume developer to give it some oomf without making it a permanent color. It came out great. I think the virgin roots took the color more evenly this time. I will update my post if I see gray peeking through sooner than I expect.

I read all the reviews and the Q and A's before I tried this. Many said the color would come out darker than advertised, but then some said that was because you're supposed to us 10-strength developer and not 20.So I bough the #10 developer and mixed it 1:1 as directed with a combo of dark blonde and light brown. I'd say the result is more of a medium to dark brown. But that's my only complaint and that's fixable (hellloooooo wash out hair color!!). I should also say that my hair was 90% gray before coloring and it did a great job covering everything. No stray grays!And my hair is thick and shiny. I'll use this again, but probably go with an even lighter shade.

I used this product according to instructions, complete with developer, and it added absolutely zero shine to my hair. It simply does not do what it is supposed to do.
