Q: What is the hat made of/how does it attach or stay on the child's head?

it was made out of felt material and it had cardboard type material to hold it up inside. It did stay on his head. My son had just turned 9 years old the size fit great. I will attach a picture.

Q: I have a son who's 2/3T would any of these sizes fit him?

If he mostly fits into size 3, the size 4 costume will still be a little large for him (sleeve and pant length).

Q: Does it actually button in the front? If no, how does it close?

The royal guard costume for kids closes with a hook and loop closure. The buttons are used for decoration purposes.
